Alstonville

Alstonville show grounds 25th - 28th November 2013.

Alstonville showground’s is really nothing to write home about, It has a huge shed that you can park under (great for running repairs on your vehicle) or outside grass parking. There are few power and water site available but most are on uneven ground. The caretaker, Jimmy (who is long past retirement in my opinion) has been labeled by some, as Mr. Grumpy and on first impressions I would agree; however he sort of mellows with time. By the time we left he had a smile on his face. Maybe because we were leaving!

We really like Alstonville town, it had a great feeling to it.

There is a memorial in the town to Patrick Bugden a recipient of the Victoria Cross (posthumously). I am always, truly amazed by the men and women who have earned the highest military award and marvel at their endeavors! These people deserve our highest praise for their actions.

This is an excerpt from a letter to his mother.

"We are going into the firing line tomorrow. If by chance anything happens, I feel that I shall gain a place of happiness for I have never done a deed that I am ashamed of so I fear nothing."

I am sure that this must have given her some comfort. Patrick Bugden was 20 years old when he died. Such a waste!

We visited Ballina and Lennox Heads while we were staying at Alstonvile and were able to tick off another big find. The Big Prawn!

A colony of bats made an appearance each night and it was great to be able to catch a video of them in the twilight.
