Gundgai

Gundagai 8th – 9th January 2014

Gundagai was a great little spot right on the river. It looked delightful and as there was no time limit we were really looking forward to this spot. However the Australian weather would once again bagainst us. The mercury was rising and although we have solar power we can’t draw enough power from Mother Nature to run air conditioning!
It looks like we may have to leave sooner and head further South to hit some cooler weather.
It seems to me that this whole trip is about finding the ideal temperature in Australia. We have come to the conclusion that there is no such place! It is too hot or too cold; it is too humid, if its not too humid it is too dry or too wet. Can you tell we’re a bit over the weather?
A visit from a Christmas beetle a bit early for 2014 me thinks. Wow the coloration on these little creatures is amazing.
Andrea and Casper enjoying the shade while they can.

Now that’s what you call a swim Bro, couldn’t get it much closer if I tried.

The fish were not biting, so nowt changes there then. If they had any sense they were keeping hidden under some over-hanging trees trying to keep cool. However memories of Topcliffe came flooding back. Just needed a few hand fulls of hemp and some barbel to feast on the luncheon meat offerings.

I know what your thinking Mr. Berry and would strongly advise against it!
Sorry Casper I can't help myself!
Indiana bones!!!!
And now you know why dogs bite their owners!
A pair of Cloncurry ( I think?) parrots came to say hello.

There is a quite famous monument to early pioneers and is sign posted ‘Dog on a tucker box’. It is located just before Gundagai if you are heading south.

Though the inscription was a bit too deep for my liking.

Yes we really liked Gundagai and will revisit another day when the weather has cooled and we are more prepared. Nice town and nice people.

Yass

Yass 5th – 8th January 2014

We had only just got settled in at the showground when I noticed thick smoke billowing into the sky. This looked quite serious as the wind was blowing a gale in our direction. We watched with mounting fear, till we heard the sirens. It was all over in the space of 30 minutes but could have been a whole lot worse. This is the closest we have been to a bush fire and hope not to be any closer.

We stopped at Yass showground’s for a couple of days to enable us to visit our capital city Canberra. We have skirted around Canberra now twice so thought it was time to call in for a look see.

Although we liked Canberra there was something missing with it and it took us a while to realise what it was.
It was too quiet. People were milling around but not talking it was a very strange place and a little eerie. It lacked the hustle and bustle of other large cities we have visited; we really did find it a strange place.
That said we did enjoy the visit to Parliament house and had a great picnic high up on its grassed hillside.
When Billy Connelly visited Parliament house he stated that, if any Politician was found to be telling lies he or she should be made to roly-poly down the hill. Billy I couldn’t agree more however a new grassed area for picnicking would have to be laid as there would be no room left on the hill

This is where all the lies are told!
and this is the hill that would be full of politicians ropy polying down it.
Bugger the politicians! What's for lunch mom!
The show ground is a bit rough to say the least and although we were happy to stay a couple of days mainly due to its location (close to Canberra). We would have stayed longer had the amenities been cleaned more often. The council are going to miss out on a lot of revenue if they don’t pick up their game

Morisset 3rd – 5th January 2014

Morisset show grounds were ok for a couple of days stop-over. We have seen many markets on our travels but Morisset market was a little bit different and well worth the visit.

Wauchope

Wauchope 30 December 2013 – 3rd January 2014

HAPPY NEW YEAR Love and best wishes to all from the 2 Tykes

Wauchope was a lovely little town not far from Port Maquarie. It was an ideal place to chill out and welcome in the New Year.

I’m sometimes amazed at the Australian place names and Wauchope was no exception. Being pronounced Warhope I have to wonder why the hell there is a ‘C’ in there?
