Labrador on the Gold Coast

Labrador (Tigers AFL club) 8th -21st October 2013

The fishing, as always was very poor with few fish caught and not many bites! When is the world going to realize that eventually the once plentiful bounty that the seas hold is being depleted at an alarming rate? So much so that fish such as Cod around the UK coast have all but been eradicated. I personally believe that the owners of super trawlers should be brought to justice for annihilating fish stocks. Yet another example of mans disregard for Mother Nature and as long as the fat cats get fatter who cares?

Ok so the fishing was shite, the company was great and we made plans for a visit to the Gold Coast. The only problem with this is that The Gold Coast is notoriously unfriendly to travellers. There is a definite no go zone for free camping within this area. I managed to find a spot at the Labrador AFL club and for the cost of annual membership ($12) was able to park within their grounds.
We managed to find a great little spot in the corner of the car park well away from the club itself. Alan the club manager was a great help, although he couldn’t promise long term camping (the grounds belong to the council) he said we could stay as long as the council would let us. This was a great location for us as Dave was literally a short 5 minutes drive away. It was so great to see both Dave and Kath who have been friends now for many years and will remain friends forever.

We are getting very apt at this camping lark and come up with many different ways of making our lives easier. We can now fillup our 70 litre on board water tanks by using water bladders and a little height. It can be slow but as we’re in no rush it works well.

We did lots of fishing mainly at the Spit (where very little was caught again). The fishing definitely comes second to the company and we have always had a great laugh while we put the world to rights. Poor Dave just can’t hold his liquor and lost at least one beer off the rock wall (Winker). He did however bring a couple of Tetleys smooth flow (ice cold with frozen pint glasses). Neither of us spilt a drop and it tasted delicious. Thanks mate!

A trip to Coolangatta for a picnic and we came across this little beauty. He didn’t seem at all bothered by our company. However the snorting bull terrier was just itching for a fight. As ever we had a tight lead on the 4-legged pugilist. If the truth be know Casper is scared of his own shadow at times.

Sadly our time at Labrador came to an end when the manager of the club got a call from the council asking us to move. We did have a great time there and were lucky that we managed to stay as long as we did.
