Hull Heads QLD

Hull Heads recreational reserve July 2nd - 5th 2013

Hull Heads is a great little spot for some cheap camping. $15 per night with pretty good amenities and a beach on your doorstep.

Literally on the door step, it was beautiful!

However it hasn't always been so tranquil at Hull Heads. Tropical Cyclone Yasi made land fall approximately 15 km south of Hull Heads with the eye of the storm passing over Mission Beach. The date was the first of February 2011.

This was one big storm and the devastation can still be seen all around!

Over 75% of all properties were destroyed at Hull Heads as winds unto 290 kph swept through. It is estimated that Yasi has been the costliest of all tropical cyclones to hit Australia with an estimated $3.5 billion in damages.

North Queensland is renowned for sugar cane crops, I have never seen so many acres of cane, there are miles after miles of the stuff. The bloody dentists (Aka highway robbers) must be rubbing their greedy palms day after day as they watch the cane being hauled out and sent to the mill.

To here (I think that is enough said about sugar!)

The sugar refinery was at a place called Tully a short drive from Hull Heads and according to the golden gumboot (wellie) one of the wettest areas in Australia!

Now then Miss poppins

The gum boot's height is 7.9 meters, which is the same as the amount of rain that fell on Tully in 1950. Now that is damn wet!

So did we see any wildlife of note while we stayed at Hull Heads? Actually we did and I have to say we are still pretty chuffed with ourselves.

Burhinus Graallarius commonly known as the Bush Stone Curlew or Bush Thick Knee.

However the CREME DE LA CREME and something most Australians will never see in the wild as they are so secretive. A Cassowary (casuarius casuarius) as rare as the proverbial hens teeth!

This sighting made our day and we were well pleased with ourselves.

Now although the cassowary is a rare find indeed an even odder creature to behold is Vaticanus Bullus terrios. more commonly known as Casper impersonating Mother Teresa.
